Local businesses, industry bodies and trainers are invited to attend a training workshop at the National Physical Laboratory (NPL), taking place at the 3M Buckley Innovation Centre on Tuesday 16th June.

The workshop is an opportunity for employers and other stakeholders to share experiences, requirements and thoughts around training needs in metrology and how the skill base can be developed in the region.

Good practice in measurement is vital to innovation, quality assurance and improving productivity. Based at the University of Huddersfield, NPL is able to offer manufacturers world leading solutions in metrology that are critical to developing advanced products and processes.

NPL can draw on national and international experts in fields as diverse as precision engineering, non-contact temperature measurement, through to light and colour measurement, acoustics, nanotechnology and other measurement-critical technologies.

It offers training, diagnostic and consultancy services, with a team at the University of Huddersfield able to draw on the expertise of more than 600 scientists based at the NPL’s main national facility in Teddington.

Andy Morris, manager of the NPL’s Huddersfield laboratory, said: “A lot of the work we do is focused on the aerospace industry and automotive manufacturing. But Leeds City Region is the biggest and one of the most diverse manufacturing centres in the UK and we’re increasingly working with companies in a wide range of other sectors such as medical technologies.

“We’re looking to tailor and develop our training portfolio, in conjunction with other providers, to meet the needs of the region’s manufacturers. The workshop will give interested parties the chance to learn more about what we can do and the opportunity to shape our approach to training.”
